Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has weighed in on the Starbucks red cup controversy, and the coffee house isn’t going to be happy.
“I have one of the most successful Starbucks, in Trump Tower. Maybe we should boycott Starbucks? I don’t know. Seriously, I don’t care. That’s the end of that lease, but who cares?” he said to supporters during a campaign stop in Springfield, Illinois, on Monday.
“If I become president, we’re all going to be saying Merry Christmas again, that I can tell you. That I can tell you.”
The kerfuffle began when the coffee giant introduced its minimalistic design for this year’s holiday season and a Christian former pastor, Joshua Feuerstein, started a campaign against the company.
Starbucks defended its design, stating on its website that a core value of the company is to create “a culture of belonging, inclusion and diversity.”
Starbucks supporters believe the entire controversy is much ado about nothing and cite evidence to prove that the company is not anti-Christmas.
Since the company never had any mention of Christmas in previous years, only winter designs, it would seem they didn’t exactly remove mentions of Christmas from this year’s cups because those mentions never existed.
Each year, Starbucks also offers for sale a Christmas Blend of its coffee, Advent calendars and Christmas cards.
It’s kind of tough to argue that this is a company waging a war on Christmas.
