President Barack Obama is about to become the first sitting president to make a prominent appearance in an LGBT publication, appearing on the cover of Out magazine.

The magazine is using the occasion to announce Obama as its “Ally of the Year” to the gay community.

In an accompanying interview, Obama said that he first realized the significance of equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community when he “was a kid.”

“My mom instilled in me the strong belief that every person is of equal worth,” he said.

“One of the reasons I got involved in politics was to help deliver on our promise that we’re all created equal, and that no one should be excluded from the American dream just because of who they are.” Then he added, “That’s why, in the Senate, I supported repealing DOMA [the Defense of Marriage Act].”

The president’s memory seems flawed. At the Saddleback Forum on social issues held three months before the 2008 election, the moderator, Rick Warren, asked Obama to define marriage.

“I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman,” he answered, to thunderous applause.  “For me as a Christian, it is also a sacred union,” he added.

Here’s a clip of that exchange.

Obama’s Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain, was also at the forum, and Obama was obviously trying to pander to the Christian community.

Now that he’s not running for office, he’s free to pander to the LGBT community.

People on social media weren’t impressed.
