Tensions mount as football team strikes; demands include ousting of ‘white privilege’ UM president

mizzou_protest_leftTensions escalated as student protesters shouted “racism lives at the University of Missouri” in continued campus demonstrations, and two dozen African-American football players announced a boycott of team activities until the university’s president resigns.

At Mizzou’s Columbia campus, a group called Concerned Student 1950 completed its sixth day of a protest demanding UM System President Tim Wolfe’s resignation, institution of a racial awareness and inclusion curriculum, and Wolfe’s acknowledgement of his “white male privilege,” among other things, Fox News reported Sunday.

One black student who participated in the protests, Abigail Hollis, said the campus is “unhealthy and unsafe for us.”

“The way white students are treated is in stark contrast to the way black students and other marginalized students are treated, and it’s time to stop that,” she said. “It’s 2015.”

Student Jonathan Butler began a hunger strike Nov. 2nd, pledging he would not eat until Wolfe was removed.

Showing solidarity with Butler and the other protesters, a group called the Legion of Black Collegians posted a statement on Twitter, which read,

The athletes of color on University of Missouri football team truly believe ‘Injustice Anywhere is a threat to Justice Everywhere.’ We will no longer participate in any football related activities until President Tim Wolfe resigns or is removed due to his negligence toward marginalized students’ experiences.’

There may be division on campus, but in the locker room, Mizzou head football coach Gary Pinkel claimed unity with his team.

A group of protesters who traveled to Kansas City to confront Wolfe posted the encounter on Twitter. When they asked him what he thinks systematic oppression is, he told them he didn’t think they’d like his answer.

“Systematic oppression is because you don’t believe that you have the equal opportunity for success,” Wolfe said before he was cut off by shouting. One protester yelled “Did you just blame us for systematic oppression, Tim Wolfe?”

While Wolfe agreed Sunday that change is needed, he has not indicated any intention of stepping down. The university’s Board of Curators will meet Monday morning at 10 a.m. CST to discuss the racially-charged atmosphere on campus.

Fox News reported on Monday that “a faculty group at the University of Missouri called for professors and other staff to walk out of classes Monday and Tuesday.”
