Young mom shot by home invader saves herself, 4-month-old baby because she owned a gun

A young North Carolina mother put her life on the line to protect her baby, Tuesday, exchanging gunfire with intruders in her home.

Semantha Bunce, 21, was feeding her four-month-old son when the door of her Charlotte home was kicked in., according to WSOC TV.

With her husband at work and older daughter at school, Bunce, a combat medic with the National Guard, rushed her baby to an upper bedroom and got her husband’s legally-owned handgun.

As the assailants began firing in the stairwell, Bunce fired back from the bedroom door, reported WSOC.

Bunce was reportedly seriously wounded, with at least two gunshot wounds and was being treated at a local hospital. The suspects got away.

“I think it was a shock to the intruders just as much as it was to her,” her husband, Paul Bunce, said, adding that her training probably helped her remain calm and mentally focused.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Capt. Chuck Henson said extra patrols have been added in the area, according to WSOC.

“This investigation is going full force ahead,” Henson said. “They’re working it very, very hard and I’m very confident that we’ll have an arrest in it at some point.”

Neighbors, who were understandably shaken and surprised by the violent nature of the crime, have rallied around the Bunces, stopping by the home to offer prayers and support.

A GoFundMe  page, set up to help the family with medical costs, has raised over $25 thousand in a few days.
