The late celebrated conservative journalist Andrew Breitbart proved just how much of a visionary he was when, in 2011, he predicted that Sen. Marco Rubio could be elected to the presidency in 2016.
The amazing thing about this prediction was that in 2011, the Florida Republican was only serving his first year as a U.S. senator and had held no federal office before that time.
At about the 8:10 mark in this July 9, 2011 interview, Univision host Jorge Ramos asked Breitbart for his thoughts on the then-upcoming 2012 presidential election.
The legendary journalist did Ramos one better.
“I think that it’s going to be an amazing year,” he said. “I think that it’s going to be like a reality series like “Survivor” or “American Idol,” and they’re going to pound each other out. And yes, I think that the strongest one will win.”
Sound familiar?
With Trump adding a seldom seen flare to the race, and the party in many ways divided, political pundits have likened the current GOP presidential nominee race to a reality show.
“But let me tell you this,” Breitbart said, taking it a step further. “If Marco Rubio, even though he’s only been the Senate for a very short period of time — that man has a huge, huge opportunity in this country, and I think he could be the president. If not in this election cycle, certainly in 2016.”
Breitbart died eight months later, on March 1, 2012, so he had no idea that in 2013, the senator would be appointed to the so-called “Gang of Eight” bi-partisan committee that would draft a proposed immigration reform bill.
Its terms were excoriated by conservatives, and the proposal never made it off the launching pad. It also tarnished Rubio’s credentials as a Tea Party lawmaker.
