Bob Beckel reveals feelings about ex-employer Fox News in awkward CNN interview

beckel-cnnFox News Channel’s former resident liberal, Bob Beckel, has moved over to CNN, and his initial appearance there sounded like an awkward job interview, with the interviewer — another Fox News alumnus — “New Day” co-host Alisyn Camerota.

“You were on the popular Fox show called ‘The Five,’” Camerota said. “You were the resident liberal. And then you disappeared for a while and there was a lot of questions about what happened to you and where you went.”

Camerota picked up a Fox News press release, which she referred to as “a barbed statement,” and read from it.

“We tried to work with Bob for months, but we couldn’t hold ‘The Five’ hostage to one man’s personal issues,” she read. “He took tremendous advantage of our generosity, empathy and goodwill and we simply came to the end of the road with him.”

Camerota asked Beckel what the statement meant.

“I really don’t know except we signed a separation agreement that said we weren’t going to say anything negative,” he said. “Apparently one of their executives didn’t get the memo.”

For many months, the official Fox News statement was that Beckel was recovering from back surgery. It was only much later that reports came out that he was under treatment for pain medication addiction.

Beckel went on to praise Fox News chairman and CEO, Roger Ailes, before implying that it was his decision to leave.

“Sitting there every day four against one can get a little bit tiring,” he said. “Just a little bit.”

Late Tuesday morning, Mediaite, which ran the original post on this interview, reported that a Fox News spokesman told the outlet that the network didn’t violate any agreement it had with Beckel.
