An evangelical pastor is finding out that when you mix bad politics with religion, something’s going to suffer.
Pro-life pastor Rev. Rob Schenck has seen his support shrink since directing and starring in an anti-gun documentary titled, “The Armor of Light,” in which he claims a contradiction exists between being pro-life and pro-Second Amendment.
“I did have supporters who announced that because I had taken on this issue they won’t make any more contributions and they won’t stand with me,” said Schenck, during a Q&A at the film’s Museum of Modern Art premier, according to the New York Post.
“We registered about a 10 percent decline. We’ve had some surprising responses, some people who said ‘I’m with you.’ At this point, most are not willing to say that publicly.”
Schenck’s film took on both the NRA and former Gov. Sarah Palin, claiming that her support for the Second Amendment, while professing to be pro-life, is misplaced.
Palin’s daughter Bristol blasted the reverend in a blog post, calling the film “liberal propaganda camouflaged as ‘thoughtful commentary.’”
Palin also notes that the film’s producer, Abigail Disney, supports Planned Parenthood, which is responsible for many times more deaths than those caused by firearms.
One reason for Schenck’s sharp decline in support may be that his parishioners know something the good pastor doesn’t — that legally-acquired guns save at least as many lives as they take.
After the Sandy Hook shooting, President Barack Obama ordered a study on gun violence. To the surprise of both the study’s authors and the president, it was found that guns are a great life-saver. The study found:
Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year.
One final note: Schenck’s base of operations is in Washington, D.C., which has something in common with Chicago. Both cities have a greater-than-normal gun-related crime rate, while possessing some of the most stringent gun laws in America.

Folks on social media weren’t surprised.
