Comedian and liberal political commentator Bill Maher called President Obama “crazy” and Democrat Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard agreed.
“I’m a proud liberal,” Maher said to Gabbard to begin the segment of his HBO show “Real Time” on Friday. “I’ve been trying to convince liberals, some of them, that they really need to go back to school on this issue of Islam and what it means to be a liberal.
Maher mocked the idea that Secretary of State John Kerry believes Islamic extremism comes from “thrill seeking” and “poverty” and said Obama is crazy for refusing to say “Islamic Extremism.”
“By saying that they’re looking for thrill-seeking or that economic prosperity will solve the problem — give them a big house, give them a skateboard, send them on their way. You think that’s going to solve the problem? It’s not,” Gabbard told Maher. “Words matter,” he added.
Maher argued that likening Islam to other religions is inherently wrong.
“They start with this premise in their head that all religions are alike, all cultures are alike, it’s a religion of peace, everything is pretty much equal, don’t judge – but they don’t really have knowledge of it,” he said to Gabbard who was deployed in Iraq as a member of the National Guard.
“It’s this philosophy that gets in the way of us being able to accomplish our mission and defeat those who are threatening us,” Gabbard agreed.
“It goes to the problem of not really recognizing there actually are things that are right and wrong. And these honor killings and other things, they are clearly and absolutely wrong,” she said.
