What these five companies did to ‘protect family time’ might surprise you

StaplesA group of stores have decided to go against the grain of recent trends and not open on Thanksgiving Day.

GameStop, Staples, P.C. Richard & Son, Mattress Firm, and Half Price Books made separate announcements declaring that they would remain closed on Thanksgiving and would instead start Black Friday sales on, get this, Friday.

“We want our customers and associates to enjoy Thanksgiving their own way,” the president of North American Stores & Online at Staples, Demos Parneros, said in a statement on October 1.“ On Thanksgiving Day, customers can shop from home on Staples.com and then continue their shopping in stores starting at 6 a.m. on Black Friday.”

Video game and electronics retailer, GameStop, followed suit on October 12 with a statement of its own.

“We believe strongly that our customers and associates should have the opportunity to spend the Thanksgiving holiday relaxing with family and friends, and not worrying with the stress of where to find the best shopping deals,” Mike Buskey, executive vice president of GameStop wrote in the statement. “We know this is in stark contrast to what many other retailers are doing, but we are taking a stance to protect family time during this important holiday.”

New York family owned retailer, P.C. Richard & Son, has never opened on Thanksgiving and they announced on October 15 that they intend to keep it that way.

“In our 106 years P.C. Richard & Son has never opened on Thanksgiving and will continue this tradition by once again remaining closed this year,” the company stated on its Facebook page. “We believe Thanksgiving should be spent with family and friends.

“It’s our opinion that retailers who choose to open on Thanksgiving show no respect to their employees and families and are in total disrespect of family values in the United States of America. Now more than ever, we’re making the pledge to #keepfamilyfirst.”

Do you agree that stores should remain closed on Thanksgiving, or would you prefer to start your shopping early?
