Todd asks Cummings: Why did Dems shield Hillary at Benghazi hearing?

chuck-todd-elijah-cummingsNBC News’ “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd asked the ranking Democratic member of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, Elijah Cummings, a question every conservative would like an answer to — why didn’t he do his job in questioning former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Rather than using his time to ask probing questions, the Maryland congressman, as well as most other Democratic committee members, used his time to shield and lend support to Clinton. The only times he raised his voice was when addressing committee chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C.

“We tallied up 68 total questions to Secretary Clinton [from Democrats],” Todd said. “Sixteen of them, at best, could we call challenging. Why did you guys choose a strategy of shield rather than a strategy of, really what Tammy Duckworth [of Illinois] did, probably the one Democrat that did it the most, of conducting a hearing, asking questions about the security situation?”

“From the very beginning, Chuck, I said we were looking for the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” Cummings said. “In many instances, we found ourselves having to not defend Secretary Clinton but to make sure the record was complete, and I’m glad that the public had an opportunity to see all of that. When you look at what we were asking about, they were the things that went to Benghazi, the things that we were supposed to be dealing with from the very beginning.”

Later into the interview, Cummings voiced the party line — that there was no change in the Benghazi story, the administration called it a planned attack all along.
