In the aftermath of New York Police Department Officer Randolph Holder being shot dead Tuesday, the slain cop’s mother has called on Mayor Bill de Blasio to “reconsider” restrictions to stop-and-frisk put in place under the “progressive” de Blasio administration, according to the New York Post.
The grieving mother, Princess Holder, spoke to FOX5NY on Wednesday and blasted the decision.
“I think Mayor de Blasio should reconsider this stop-and-frisk because I think it’s gonna be a deterrent to these thugs who go around taking innocent people’s lives,” Holder said.
Criminal justice experts said the reduction of the stop-and-frisk program was a contributing factor in the death of Officer Holder, according to CBS New York.
“They feel more encouraged and emboldened to carry weapons on the street,” said former NYPD officer and FBI agent, Manny Gomez. “That has a direct correlation, I would suggest, to more cops getting killed on the streets.”
Even Democrats are rethinking stop-and-frisk.
“Since the latest restrictions on stop-and-frisk by the city administration and the courts, the rate of police officer deaths by gunfire went up significantly,” said Brooklyn state Assemblyman William Colton.
Backed by the left-wing Working Families Party, the lawmaker is not exactly a moderate.
Colton echoed Gomez’s view, saying “respect for police authority is fading and criminals are getting more brazen.”
“We need city leaders to step up and establish strong policies to remove guns from the hands of criminals — not to strip police officers of authority and undermine community respect for professional police activities,” he said.
It’s time for de Blasio to walk back to the right road.
