NBC’s Andrea Mitchell hotly defends Hillary over Benghazi committee’s line of questioning

mitchell-pompeoNBC News anchor Andrea Mitchell bristled over the suggestion that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton relied on Clinton confidante, Sidney Blumenthal, for most of her intelligence on Libya in the weeks and months before the Benghazi attack.

“That is just factually not correct,” she told House Select Committee on Benghazi member Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Kansas.

Mitchell suggested that the committee was more a political witch hunt directed at Clinton than it was a fact-finding body.

“How long for this final report?” she asked Pompeo at about the 1:45 mark. “Is it going to be in the middle of 2016? Is it going to be after the election?”

Democratic committee member, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, took Mitchell’s side and said that the committee doesn’t know what it’s looking for.

“We can’t put an end date on it because we don’t know what this committee’s supposed to look for,” he told Mitchell. “Apart from damaging Hillary Clinton, it has no reason for existence.”

“Why, then, do you call Sid Blumenthal, Huma Abedin and all of these other personal aides and non-aides?” Mitchell asked. “Why have you focused so much on emails and not on the central question of why was the security [a] failure at that consulate?”

Pompeo answered that “Secretary Clinton relied on Mr. Blumenthal for most of her intelligence,”

Mitchell was having none of it, and shot back, “That is factually not correct… I cover the State Department. That is just factually not correct.”

Clinton apparently didn’t rely on the late Ambassador Chris Stevens for intelligence. He assessed the situation and had repeatedly asked for beefed-up security. Security was instead decreased.
