Lifeboat quiz for sixth-graders is appalling: Would you save a black guy, Hispanic woman, Obama . . . ?

A Florida mom is hopping mad after her elementary-age daughter was given a “lifeboat quiz” asking her to choose who should live or die — a black guy or a Hispanic woman, among 13 others.

Valerie Kennel, mother of 11-year-old Leah, called the quiz both “racist” and “inappropriate,” according to Tampa Bay NBC affiliate WFLA Channel 8 News.

The sixth-graders were asked to indicate which nine of the 15 people they would save, and which six they would let die.

“It’s racist in every form,” Kennel told Channel 8 News.

“This had nothing to do with history, nothing to do with it, and what is it teaching them?”

WFLA reported:

The mother of two wonders why her daughter had to make a “very adult” choice on a test, an assignment that upset Leah. “Who do you pick? Why is one person better than the other? Why does some get left out?” she asked.

So, who would you get rid of in this situation: The white man or the black man?  The Hispanic woman or the pregnant woman? The rabbi or the minister? President Barack Obama or Donald Trump?

“Leah is 11. How is she supposed to pick people based off of what they’re saying? Like, to her everybody matters. Everybody should have a chance,” Kennel said.

“They didn’t do anything wrong. Everybody deserves to be saved.”

Leah said she wasn’t the only one upset by the test. When one classmate refused to take the test and ripped it up,he was reprimanded by the teacher and sent next door to “time out.”

“Whenever I got it at school, I was like, I don’t want to do this, and I got kind of upset about it,” Leah said.

Kennel plans to meet with the principal.

“They need to be careful with what their teachers are putting out there,” Kennel said.

The Hillsborough County School District referred to the test as a team-building exercise and not designed to be racist.

“This school has a culturally diverse population,” a spokesperson told News Channel 8. “The test brought up good debates on how to work together, building relationships.”
