Famous role models that exemplify strength and integrity are hard to come by these days – but one could be emerging from an unlikely place.
Mixed martial artist, Ronda Rousey, was paid a surprise visit by drug testers after decidedly winning an Ultimate Fighting Championship 190 match in Brazil in August.
Rousey had just knocked out her opponent when she was asked to leave for about 20 minutes to provide a blood sample — likely putting the celebratory spirit on hold.
Jeff Novitzky, is head of the UFC’s anti-doping staff and later asked the testers about Rousey’s reaction to the spontaneous confrontation. Novitzky was thrilled to hear Rousey’s mature response, and reiterated it for USA Today.
“They were like, ‘She couldn’t thank us enough. She said thank you guys so much for coming down here. You traveled all the way from the United States to do this, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate what you’re doing.’”
Rousey is a rising star who’s quickly gaining recognition for her physical strength along with her strength of character. Novitzky couldn’t be happier to have her as an ambassador for the UFC’s anti-doping program.
“That’s really important, that our top athletes are ambassadors because they’re role models not only to the public, but to our other athletes,’’ he said.
“And when they heard Ronda Rousey out there confirming this is a great program and something good for UFC, I think that not only the public listens, but our other athletes listen.”
Let’s hope so.
