‘Homeland’ TV set sabotaged by artists hired to paint ‘Arabic symbols’

Sometimes, attention to detail can be rather important.

The Showtime TV series “Homeland” hired a group of street artists to give their sets more authenticity, but were duped big-time when the group painted hidden messages in Arabic on the walls of a mock Syrian refugee camp calling the show a “joke” and “racist,” according to the Daily Mail.

Worse yet, no one was aware the artists sabotaged the set and the slogans were broadcast in the show’s second episode.

The artists were looking to voice their discontent at Homeland’s portrayal of Muslims, which they described as “highly biased,” the Mail reported.

The group was instructed to keep the messages apolitical, but set designers never followed up to see what was actually written.

The Mail reported on what was painted on the walls:

Among the messages spray painted across the set were ‘Homeland is racist’, ‘ready to die’, ‘Homeland is NOT a series’ and ‘#blacklivesmatter’.

Others were more humorous, with ‘Homeland is a watermelon’, ‘Homeland is a joke that didn’t make us laugh’, and ‘this show does not represent the views of the artists’ included.

Egyptian visual artist Heba Amin was one of the artists and she explained their motivation on her website.

“It was our moment to make our point by subverting the message using the show itself,” she wrote, adding that they saw it as an opportunity to relay “our own and many others’ political discontent with the series.”

Amin said the group decided to ignore directions given and “arm ourselves with slogans, with proverbs allowing for critical interpretation, and, if the chance presented itself, blatant criticism directed at the show.”
