Do black lives matter more than everyone else’s to the Democrats running for president? Apparently so.
The first video question in the Democratic presidential debate Tuesday on CNN, submitted via Facebook, was by Drake University law school student, Sterling Arthur, who asked the softest of softball questions.
“Do black lives matter or do all lives matter?” he asked.
“Black lives matter,” Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders answered without hesitation.
In this either-or-question, Sanders’ answer seemed to indicate he believes only black lives matter.
“The reason those words matter is the African-American community knows that on any given day, some innocent person like Sandra Bland can get into a car and then three days later she’s going to end up dead in jail,” the pandering Sanders said, citing the idea that Bland was murdered when all evidence pointed to the fact that she committed suicide in her jail cell.
POLL: Who do you think won CNN’s Democratic Presidential Debate?
Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who was booed at the 2015 Netroots Convention in July when he said “All lives matter,” was more evasive in his response.
“The Black Lives Matter movement is making … a very, very legitimate and serious point, and that is that as a nation we have undervalued the lives of black lives, people of color,” he said.
Front-runner Hillary Clinton was let off the hook as debate moderator Anderson Cooper rephrased the question, asking her what she would do for the black community that President Obama has not.
“I think that President Obama has been a great moral leader on these issues and has laid out an agenda that has been obstructed by Republicans at every turn. So what we need to be doing is not only reforming criminal justice, I have talked about that at some length, including things like body cameras, but we also need to be following the recommendations of the commission that President Obama empaneled on policing. There is an agenda there that we need to be following up on. Similarly we need to tackle mass incarceration,” she said, as if only black people go to jail.
Swing and a miss by all three candidates on an easy softball right over the plate.
