From none other than sometimes journalist, sometimes immigration activist Jorge Ramos, Democratic National Committee chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, found herself in a real awkward “put your money where your mouth is” moment following Tuesday night’s Democratic presidential debate.
And based on an answer that was destitute of any substance, she missed her mark.
POLL: Who do you think won CNNâs Democratic Presidential Debate?
In an interview with Ramos, who moonlights as a pro-illegal immigrant advocate, Wasserman Schultz was asked about the lack of diversity in her party — a glaring reality when the five old, white Democratic candidates are held up against a Republican presidential field that includes a black candidate, an Indian American candidate and two Hispanic candidates.
“Does the Democratic Partyâ when I was watching the debate, what I was thinking was the Democratic Party lacked diversity,” Ramos said. âI didnât see a Latino, or an African-American, or an Asian on that stage.â
In all but claiming that her best friend is black, Wasserman Schultz pointed to the current occupant of the White House.
âFirst of all, our president of the United States, who is a Democrat, is African-American,” she said, with an awkward chuckle. “So certainly we have an absolute demonstration of commitment to diversity, because out party nominated the first African-American and then Americans elected him not once, but twice.â
The Florida Democrat went on to claim that, up and down the ballot, “there is overwhelmingly more diversity” in her party.
âWe are the party of diversity,â she claimed. âThe Republicans are essentially the party of a monolithic view that is narrow-minded and says, âLetâs take this country backwards.ââ
Only if you allow your eyes to deceive you.
