Is your little snowflake feeling left out during recess? Two Minnesota public elementary schools have the answer. They’re spending tens of thousands of dollars to hire “recess consultants” to remove the trauma of playtime activities.
That was one of the issues tackled in Friday’s airing of “The Five” on Fox News, and the satire was out in full force from co-host Greg Gutfeld.
The consultants call for “replacing ‘you’re out’ with, ‘good job,’’ according to Gutfeld.
“Recess is indeed a war zone cloaked in cruelty,” he said, pouring on the sarcasm. “We know tag is wrong. Calling a child ‘it’ can only lead to future mental trauma.”
After going through a laundry list of typical childhood games and noting what’s “wrong” with them, Gutfield concluded that, “recess is offensive because everything is offensive!”
Even the panel’s liberal columnist, Juan Williams, thought it was ridiculous.
“I don’t get it,” he said. “They want to put all of us in a bubble.”
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported:
Some parents have welcomed the arrival of the firm Playworks, which says recess can be more inclusive and beneficial to children if it’s more structured and if phrases like, “Hey, you’re out!” are replaced with “good job” or “nice try.”
But some of the kids at Concord and Normandale Elementary say they are confused, or that the consultants are ruining their play time.
“The philosophy of Playworks does not fit Concord,” parent Kathy Sandven told the Star-Trib. “It is a structured philosophy — an intervention philosophy — not allowing kids for free play.”
