Now that House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy is out of the running for House Speaker, current Speaker John Boehner has turned to someone else to make a bid for the top spot — Rep. Paul Ryan.
Not only do indications point in that direction, but a conservative radio host and blogger has even predicted it “appears to be a done deal,” although nothing official has been announced.
With establishment Republican McCarthy of California out, and conservatives Jason Chaffetz of Utah and Daniel Webster of Florida unable to secure the votes needed to become Speaker, all eyes are are turning to the gentleman from Wisconsin.
Ryan, who was also Mitt Romney’s running mate in Romney’s 2012 presidential bid, previously said he isn’t interested in the job.
Nonetheless, Washington Post national political correspondent, Robert Costa, reported late Thursday afternoon that Boehner asked Ryan to consider it for the good of the party.

MSNBC also reported that a Ryan run would have the support of McCarthy.

When Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., indicated he wasn’t interested in the position, he also pointed to Ryan.
“To me, just speaking as one member, the smartest kid in the class is Paul Ryan,” Gowdy told The Washington Post on Tuesday. “If I had one draft choice and I was starting a new country, I would draft Paul to run it. Not because I agree with him on everything, but because he’s super, super smart.”
Ryan’s also been approached by other GOP house members, CNN reported:
Along with Boehner, Deputy Majority Whip Tom Cole, R-Oklahoma, and Rep. Devin Nunes, R-California, are also personally encouraging Ryan to change his mind. Both said Ryan is the clear choice to unite the party — and Cole said Boehner is well aware of that. Both are moderate Republicans in the inner circle of current leadership, including Boehner.
The full GOP conference is scheduled to meet Friday morning on Capitol Hill. Ryan may be the subject on everyone’s minds.
This doesn’t mean Ryan is a sure bet, even if he runs.
Radio host Erick Erickson disagrees. He said it’s already over, and he’s using his own observation of phone traffic on Capitol Hill to make the prediction. He said:
Friends of Paul Ryan’s are no longer making phone calls to urge Paul Ryan to get in the race for Speaker. Instead, they are making phone calls to make sure others will support him. That’s a clear indication that Paul Ryan has decided he will run for Speaker of the House.
This appears to be a done deal. Paul Ryan will be Speaker of the House.
Erickson’s prediction indicates he believes Ryan will be able to pick up enough conservative votes to win the speakership — whether Ryan wants it or not. And if that’s the case, he may be the perfect person for the job — a bridge between moderate and conservative Republicans who is “super, super smart.”
