Harry Reid sues exercise band manufacturer over eye injury

Harry Reid suesSenate Minority Leader Harry Reid is suing the company that manufactures and markets the exercise band that he says broke or slipped from his hand, leading to the serious injuries he suffered to his face and eye earlier this year.

According to the court documents filed on Tuesday, Reid claims the injuries he suffered in the New Year’s Day accident were caused by a defect in the resistance band, leading to more than $50,000 in damages.

“As a result of the TheraBand breaking or slipping out of his hand, Plaintiff Harry Reid has suffered and continues to suffer from severe pain and injuries including, but not limited to, loss of vision in his right eye, a concussion, broken orbital bones, severe disfigurement and bruising to his face, hand injuries, facial lacerations, scarring, and broken ribs,” argues the complaint, according to Roll Call.

The complaint also alleges Reid’s injuries could impact his ability to secure employment, despite the fact that the senator plans on retiring at the end of his current Senate term in 2017.

Claiming that the exercise band is “unreasonably dangerous,” the complaint alleges that the firm failed to warn consumers about “dangers that may result from the use or foreseeable misuse” of the product.

Reid’s use (or “foreseeable misuse”) of the band allegedly resulted in broken bones around his eye, fractured ribs, a concussion, cuts and bruises, and significant loss of vision in his right eye, according to the lawsuit.

Apparently, that’s one heck of a dangerous exercise band.
