Rick Scott: ‘We’re bigger than New York now’ – Florida Gov. Rick Scott defended his “trade mission” to New York on Wednesday after City Council speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito called it a “traveling circus” intended to “steal jobs” from the city and state. “Twenty million people live in my state, I’ve got to make sure that they all get good paying jobs,” Scott told POLITICO New York. Rudy Giuliani raising money for Miami-Dade mayor – Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani was in Miami Wednesday to help Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez with his reelection campaign. Giuliani, a former GOP presidential candidate, visited Gimenez at his County Hall office and then addressed a meeting of Miami-Dade department heads. Then the fellow Republicans left the downtown building for an Gimenez fund-raiser at local business executive Manny Kadre’s house. Read more
Conservative House Republicans just declared war against establishment GOP – The conservative House Freedom Caucus announced Wednesday that it will vote for Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Fla., to take over as House speaker when the Republican conference chooses its candidate Thursday. This move is a jab at Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who is currently Speaker John Boehner’s second in command. Read more
RPOF, FDP nearly neck and neck in state fundraising – for now – Florida is gearing up for 2016, with the state’s two major political parties ramping up efforts to raise cash as they enter another big election year in the Sunshine State. The second fundraising quarter in Florida from April 1 to the end of June took place during a critical time for the Republican Party of Florida and the Florida Democratic Party — both were funneling significant cash into the nail-biter Jacksonville mayoral race. Bill would allow Florida churches to say no to gay marriages – A bill that would allow churches to refuse to marry gay couples won its first approval Wednesday even though its sponsor said churches already have that right and he knows of no cases in which a church has been forced to perform a same-sex wedding ceremony.
