‘Today’ show’s Savannah Guthrie corners Hillary: ‘Do you get how bad it looks?’

NBC’s Savannah Guthrie exposed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Monday for playing politics with the ongoing controversy over the former secretary of state using a private email account.

At a town hall on the “Today” show, Clinton was called out for trying to use an ill-suited comment about the select committee on Benghazi made by House majority leader Kevin McCarthy, with Guthrie noting that Clinton apologized to the American people for using private email accounts.

Contrasting the candidate’s claim that the scandal was made up by Republicans to hurt her campaign, Guthrie asked: “Which is it? If you’re blaming the Republicans, some might wonder how genuine is that apology?”

“Well, actually it’s both,” Clinton replied, before engaging in a song and dance that would make “Bubba” proud.

“I mean, I’m sorry that I made a choice that has resulted in this kind of situation, and I’ve said I’ve made a mistake,” she continued. “Obviously if I had to do it over again, I wouldn’t. It was allowed and everybody has confirmed that. But it’s also, as we now know very clearly, the way that the Republicans are trying to bring my – as they admit – poll numbers down.”

“So it’s really both, Savannah,” Clinton said. “It’s both, ‘Hey, you know what, turn the clock back, it was allowed.’ I was thinking about many other things [than] my email account when I became secretary of state.”

Guthrie quickly reminded Clinton of the optics of her decision.

“It’s allowed, but you know, anybody who works in government knows it’s really not encouraged to use your personal email,” the co-host said. “And I just — do you get how bad it looks?”

Clinton repeated her claim that it was allowed — like an “everyone else was doing it” defense.

“Well, Savannah, first of all, it was allowed,” she said. “And I’ve said it wasn’t the best choice. And every government official gets to decide what is personal and work-related.”
