One of the survivors of the Oregon community college shooting last Thursday still opposes gun control, despite having lost a kidney due to the attack.
Cheyeanne Fitzgerald, 16, is still in critical condition at Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg after surgeons removed one of her kidneys.
Her brother, Jessy Atkinson, revealed that the family discussed gun control following the Umpqua Community College massacre, and they all remain opposed to such measures — including Cheyeanne, according to the Daily Mail.
“We’re pro second amendment, pro guns,” Atkinson told the Mail. “My sister, my mother, my whole family are all in favor. We were talking about it in the hospital and none of us have changed our minds.”
He added that he’d like to see an armed security force at schools, and have instructors taught in defense tactics.
“We should have teachers trained in non-lethal ways to take people down,” he said. “There is surely a way to defend kids at school. Armed guards on campuses maybe.”
His sister remains hesitant talking about the tragedy, according to Atkinson.
“Talking about what happened is hard for her. I don’t like to bring it up too much when she’s around” he said.
“It’s hard for her to move right now,’ said Atkinson. ‘It’s painful for her to move around and she can’t sit up by herself. She’s also pretty disoriented from the medication.”
To help defray medical expenses, the family opened a GoFundMe page and are hoping to raise $10,000.
The family’s beliefs on the Second Amendment and gun control are shared by the family of another victim, Quinn Cooper, 18, who was murdered in Thursday’s bloodbath.
In a statement released Friday, his family said that although their lives were “shattered beyond repair,” they don’t favor gun control legislation to be passed as a result.
We are hearing so many people talk about gun control and taking people’s guns away.
If the public couldn’t have guns it wouldn’t help since sick people like this will always be able to get their hands on a gun.
We need to be able to protect ourselves as a community and as a nation. Please don’t let this horrible act of insanity become about who should or shouldn’t have a gun.
Please remember the victims and their families. Please remember Quinn.
