Talk about bad luck: Dunkin’ Donuts endured two public relations nightmares involving law enforcement officers in a span of less than 24 hours over the weekend.
The first incident took place late Friday in Rhode Island, when an officer was given a cup with #BlackLivesMatter written on it, followed by an incident Saturday morning in Connecticut, where an officer was told, “We don’t serve cops here,” according to GoLocalProv.com.
In the earlier incident, a Providence Police Department officer was handed the cup without commentary when he ordered a coffee, prompting fellow Officer William O’Donnell to ask on social media, “When is this silliness going to end?”
O’Donnell posted a photo of the cup on Facebook, along with this comment:
“So my coworker just went to get a coffee at Dunkin Donuts on Atwells Avenue in Providence. The worker was immediately rude, and didn’t appear to want to serve him in Uniform. Upon leaving he noticed what she wrote on his coffee cup. #blacklivesmatter. ? Would you drink it? My suggestion…….absolutely not, go to Starbucks. When is this silliness going to end. But if the store gets robbed she’d be calling us immediately to help AND we will because that’s what we do!!!!!!!!!”
Providence Fraternal Order of Police vice president Mike Iamondi told GoLocal that the incident was “unacceptable,” and that they are concerned about the welfare and safety of law enforcement officers.
“We have to look at the possibility if “Black Lives Matter” is on the cup, is there anything else going into the cup?” he said. “That is a possibility, given what’s going on around the country.”

“Has it gotten to the point everywhere we go, do we have to wonder if someone is going to try and slip us something and without us knowing?” Iamondi added, “Where does it end?”
Police are fed up with what’s going on around the country, Iamondi said.
“I’ll tell you right now, this is not a game, we’re tired of being the whipping boys,” he said. “The few random acts of police overstepping their bounds nationally — there are more incidents of police officers handling themselves in professional manner, every day.”
With plenty at stake, Dunkin’ Donuts’ corporate office issued this statement regarding the two incidents:
“The two separate and isolated incidents involving Dunkin’ Donuts employees in Providence and West Hartford are not consistent with our commitment to provide outstanding guest service. Dunkin’ Donuts and our franchisees share a commitment to the well-being and fair treatment of all our guests. The franchisees in both cases have apologized on behalf of their employees to the police and very much regret the situations.”
