Progressives who were claiming Pope Francis as one of their own are starting to lose faith after the Vatican on Wednesday confirmed the pope met secretly with embattled Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis during last week’s visit to the United States.
What’s more, the meeting was the Vatican’s idea.
When reports first circulated that Davis’ lawyers had claimed she met with the pope, the story was met with skepticism throughout the liberal media, but Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi left no more room for doubt, according to The New York Times.
“I do not deny that the meeting took place, but I have no other comments to add,” he said.
Even though it would have been ridiculous for Davis to fabricate a story like this, liberals were praying it wasn’t true because they want this pope to change the Catholic church into a rainbow flag-waving bastion of modern progressiveness.
As for Davis herself, she described the meeting to ABC News Wednesday, saying she had tears in her eyes and added that “it was really humbling to think he would want to meet or know me,” because she considers herself “just a nobody.” She said she’d gotten a phone call several weeks before Francis was scheduled to be in the country to set up the meeting.
It took place at the Vatican embassy in Washington on Thursday.
“I put my hand out and he reached and he grabbed it, and I hugged him and he hugged me,” Davis told ABC. “And he said, ‘Thank you for your courage.’ ”
According to The Times, Davis, her husband, Joe, and Vatican officials kept the meeting secret until the pope left the United States on purpose. “We didn’t want the pope’s visit to be focused on Kim Davis,” her lawyer, Matthew Staver, said.
For Davis, who spent five days in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples in Rowan County, Ky., the visit was clearly a victory.
And as happy as Davis was with the meeting, progressives were outraged. The news was greeted with headlines like one on the lefty Salon.com that declared, “The ‘Cool Pope’ honeymoon is over.”
“THE POPE IS A LIBERAL! YEEEAAHH!!! WOO!!” “He met with renowned bigot Kim Davis.” “THE POPE IS THE WORST EVER GAAHHH!!!”

Pope Francis supported Kim Davis; John Paul George & Ringo all released bad solo tracks. Sometimes ppl we love can still do crappy things.
