Social media SMACK-DOWN: Left tries to spin the pope on abortion, gets schooled instead

Congressional-PopePope Francis became the first pope to address a joint meeting of Congress on Thursday, and placed a heavy emphasis on shared social responsibility in his message.

A persistent theme from the pontiff that drives the debate in America over just how liberal he is.

The debate is so persistent that the media asked His Holiness about it on his historic flight to the United States.

“Some people might say some things sounded slightly more left-ish, but that would be a mistake of interpretation,” he said, adding that his views on economics “is that of the social doctrine of the church.”

It’s not by accident that the Pope is seen as left-of-center, as the liberal media frequently put a deliberate spin on his words, while downplaying, if not flat-out ignoring, views that may be seen as conservative.

A practice that was on display again Thursday in response to the pope’s speech before Congress.

While he never directly mentioned abortion, the pontiff spoke of how the Golden Rule “reminds us of our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development.”

“If we want life, let us give life,” he said.

The message was an unmistakable denouncement of abortion, but Davids Corn, the Washington editor of the left-of-center magazine Mother Jones, took to social media to downplay the point by putting his spin on the pontiff’s priorities:

While Corn is sure to convince those eager to belief him, the reaction on social media would suggest he has his work cut out for him to get beyond the pro-abortion zealots.
