Here’s how Ted Cruz handles Stephen Colbert

Colbert CruzSen. Ted Cruz appeared on “The Late Show” with host Stephen Colbert challenging him on the senator’s professed similarities to former President Ronald Reagan and his opposition to gay marriage.

Playing to his own left wing base, Colbert attempted to make Reagan’s entire agenda seem to have been based on raising taxes and giving amnesty to illegal aliens. But Cruz fired back strong, schooling the host on what Reagan was really about.

“Ronald Reagan also signed the largest tax cut in history, he reduced government regulations from Washington and economic growth exploded,” Cruz said. “What Reagan did, he cut taxes, he cut regulations, he unchained small business and economic growth boomed. Millions of people were lifted out of poverty and into prosperity in the middle class.”

Cruz also told Colbert that he liked to stay above the fray of political insults against his opponents, Republicans and Democrats, and wants to keep the focus on how to fix the country.

“What I am fighting for are simple principles,” he said. “Live within our means, stop bankrupting our kids and grandkids, follow the Constitution.”

“And no gay marriage,” Colbert shot back, to the delight of his audience.

“Let’s be precise. Under the Constitution, marriage is a question for the states, if you want to change the marriage law…” he said, before being interrupted by Colbert who showed he is unfamiliar with the Constitution by saying “It doesn’t mention marriage in the Constitution.”

“The Tenth Amendment says if it doesn’t mention it, it’s a question for the states.” Cruz said.

Cruz was briefly booed by the audience when he said he believes in democracy, but Colbert stepped in and asked the crowd to be respectful.
