A Texas man who said his truck had been vandalized by Black Lives Matter supporters was arrested on suspicion of doing it himself.
Disabled veteran Scott Lattin told Whitney police on Sept. 8 that his truck had been spray-painted with “Black Lives Matter” and other anti-police and anti-American slogans, KDFW-TV reported.
Lattin’s story was reported by the media, which helped him to accrue more than $6,000 in donations to repair his truck, but it also proved to be his undoing.
Police watched the KDFW-TV report and noticed discrepancies between the story Lattin had given them and the story he told the station.
“We had initial video when the officers took the report, and then when we saw your story on Channel 4. When we looked at those two videos, there were some differences in those, and that led us to take the investigation into a different direction,” Whitney Police Chief Chris Bentley told KDFW-TV.
Bentley said that when police took the report from Lattin, there was no damage on the inside of his truck, but that when KDFW-TV interviewed him, there was damage.
“That’s absolutely not true! Absolutely not true,” Lattin told KDFW-TV about allegations that he vandalized his own vehicle, but his arrest warrant on a charge of filing a false police report says he acknowledged damaging the inside of the vehicle for insurance purposes.
