A street performer painted her toddler girl’s bare chest on Monday in Times Square, using her to attract attention by waving “N” and “Y” signs for New York.
Maria Diaz was eventually told to cover her child up by New York City police.
Reaction was mixed, according to a story in the New York Daily News, with some accepting the behavior and some not.
“That’s disgusting,” a tourist said. “A mother should have better judgment than to do that to the kid … who knows what someone could have done.”
Street performers have been under fire recently for going topless in Times Square in order to attract tips from tourists. Performers will paint their breasts in red, white, and blue and attempt patriotic and New York City based themes.
In recent months, elected officials have attempted to create a law banning such “performance” from the streets. In August, Mayor DeBlasio promised to take action to stop them.
“It’s wrong, it’s just wrong,” the mayor said of the painted ladies. “I don’t like the situation in Times Square.”
