Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said he would deport illegal immigrants from the country “so fast that your head will spin,” and he’s not backing away from the claim.
Participating on a dial-in call Thursday night with GOP voters, hosted by the Alabama Republican Party, Trump was asked about a timeline for removing undocumented immigrants in the United States illegally, and said the daunting task could be completed in two years or less, according to The Wall Street Journal.
“I think it’s a process that can take 18 months to two years if properly handled,” he said.
Trump acknowledged that while many estimate there are roughly 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., the number could be much higher.
“It’s been 11 million for years, but they don’t know what it is, it could be much more than that,” the real-estate tycoon added.
Trump spelled out that the more appealing of those removed could get in line to come back legally.
“We’re a nation of laws, and the word ‘illegal,’ as in illegal immigration, means they’re not here legally,” he told participants on the call. “We have to get them out. If we have wonderful cases, they can come back in, but they have to come back in legally.”
Once the deportations are complete, Trump said, he’d build a wall running along the border with Mexico.
