‘Oath Keepers’ pledge to protect Kentucky clerk Kim Davis

Armed guards may confront government officials when a national militia, made up mostly of retired military and police, deploys to protect a Kentucky clerk jailed for refusing to license gay marriages.

The Oath Keepers, an organization of current and former military members, police officers, and first responders, announced they will physically guard Kim Davis, the Rowan clerk refusing to approve gay marriages in her county.

“People should consider her under our protection,” Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes says in a YouTube video.

Rhodes added that Judge David Bunning, who had sent Davis to jail for contempt of court and warned her not to interfere again with the issuance of marriage licenses, overstepped his position and violated due process and the Constitution.

On their website, the Oath Keepers say they are taking the position not because of gay marriage but because the Constitution was violated, and issued the following statement:

Now we see the rise of an imperial judiciary that not only legislates from the bench but is attempting to expand their “contempt” power to likewise swallow up our Bill of Rights and circumvent jury trial. No innocent until proven guilty before a jury. Just “guilty” because the leader says so.  That is a dictatorship, whether done by a president or by a judge.

The Oath Keepers plan to maintain a rotation of protectors, and say they have contacted Davis’ attorney.

The Oath Keepers have a list on their website of orders they refuse to obey from government, including any to disarm the American people or conduct warrantless searches.
