Senators suggest immunity to get Hillary staffers to talk; could plan backfire on GOP?

Senate investigators suggested immunity for Bryan Pagliano, a former staffer for the State Department, in exchange for testifying against his old boss, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Pagliano, who last week refused to answer testimony on Constitutional grounds regarding the server and email setup for former Secretary Clinton that he helped maintain, is now being compelled to do so through immunity.

On Tuesday, Senators Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Ron Johnson, R-Wisconsin, wrote Pagliano’s lawyer, saying they “have the authority to obtain an immunity order, to acquire the information they need, while also protecting your right against self-incrimination,”

Such actions could backfire on Senate Republicans, setting up a scenario where Clinton’s staffer could use the immunity to take the blame of any criminal wrong-doing by his boss.

The Washington Times reports that two Senate investigators came up with the idea, but it is not clear who these investigators are.

The suggested immunity happened to coincide with a television appearance where Clinton took partial responsibility for the first time.

Appearing on ABC news on Tuesday, Clinton changed direction on handling the issue, saying that she was “sorry” and taking responsibility specifically for the decision to maintain a private email server.

“In retrospect, as I look back at it now, even though it was allowed, I should have used two accounts — one for personal, one for work-related emails. That was a mistake. I’m sorry about that. I take responsibility,” said Clinton.

Any accusations of illegal activities by Clinton through the immunity process would depend on the former Clinton staffer turning her in. Pagliano, who has not only had access to Clinton’s home, but has appeared in pictures with both Clinton and her husband, was also in charge of information technology for Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign.
