The Hillary Clinton campaign was in full holiday damage control mode on Monday after a reporter tweeted a photo of what appeared to be a pledge the audience at a Hillary event was asked to sign before even getting in to hear the Democratic front-runner speak.
It was a commitment to vote for Hillary in 2016.

The picture was tweeted by Salena Zito, a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review columnist whose coverage of Hillary’s speech Sunday in Cleveland drew an embarrassing picture of the woman Democrats nationally have pinned such hopes on. It was headlined “Hillary Misses Mark with Millennials” — and here’s a sample:
There wasn’t the sound of crickets chirping, but no one picked up what she put down.
Clinton spoke for 30 minutes on voter suppression, gun control, women’s reproductive rights; she called Republicans “terrorists” and championed foster care. The only time she caught the audience’s attention was with a brief mention of college affordability.
It was as if time had passed her by.
That’s about as damning a line as could be written, but the photo Zito tweeted of the “commitment pledge” really got the Hillary campaign going. It’s an organization that should be immune to embarrassment, given its figurehead and her perennially embarrassing husband, but it’s not.
On Monday afternoon, after Zito’s tweet had been public for more than five hours, a campaign spokeswoman responded:
not true. like other candidates, we offer people a chance to commit to vote but it is not a restriction to attend. https://t.co/yKQUZ5kwog

By then, the damage was done. Hillary’s partisans were already out of course — as Hillary partisans, they have a lot of practice defending the woman at a moment’s notice — but the responses Zito’s tweet netted ranged from mockery to scorn. That’s not exactly the kind of “commitment” the campaign was looking for.

@SalenaZitoTrib@kevincorke what a joke. She’s desperate and knows she’s done.

This one about sums it up, though.
@SalenaZitoTrib As the campaign continues to sink, desperation forces yet another stupid act. The HRC campaign implosion continues…

Until the next one.
