In what proved to be a plus for all parties involved, two South Florida cops are in the spotlight after giving a homeless man a free meal.
Coral Springs police Officers Jonathan Greenleaf and Tyler Reik are drawing lots of attention after they decided to take advantage of an offer from Arby’s Restaurants for a free meal for police officers in two Florida counties.
The offer was extended for one day, Friday, in response to an earlier incident in which an Arby’s employee refused to serve an officer — according to CNN, few officers took the restaurant chain up on the offer.
But Greenleaf and Reik saw an opportunity to improve their relationship with the local community and, approaching a homeless man they’ve encountered many times before, offered him their meals, according to WSVN-TV.
WSVN-TV reported:
The good Samaritans in uniform chose Robert, a homeless man in the area whom they know well, because he is always is respectful and nice to them and offers his help.
Reik explained that they only wanted “to help the less fortunate.”
“When we first approached Robert, he actually was kind of caught off guard,” the officer told WSVN. “I mean, he was very thankful. We obviously gave him a ride down to Arby’s in the patrol car and got him out there, and … whatever he wanted from the menu, we went ahead and ordered for him.”
A photo of the incident was posted on social media:
“He obviously wasn’t looking for attention or anything, just like we weren’t,” Greenleaf added. “But he was grateful.”
The generosity displayed by the two cops earned them praise from Coral Springs Police Chief Tony Pustizzi.

“I just want to say thank you, guys, very much, for everything you do on a daily basis,” Pustizzi told the officers.
As for Arby’s, Greenleaf is willing to let bygones be bygones.
“They had an unfortunate incident involving a couple of their employees, and you don’t want to hold that against an entire corporation for one small incident,” he said.
