Texas Sheriff publishes op-ed: Police authority comes from God, we can no longer be silent

A Texas sheriff says people must respect police because their authority comes not from government but from God.

Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks published an op-ed in the Herald Banner, in Greenville, Texas, after a grand jury cleared one of his officers of punching a pregnant Iraq war veteran, and declared police authority comes from God.

Due to recent events, I can no longer be silent concerning what our country allows. It is amazing to me that the criminals who break into our homes and steal from us, those who sell drugs to our children, those who abuse innocent and defenseless children, those who rape our wives and daughters, those who commit cold-blooded murders are all innocent until proven guilty.

Yet, law enforcement officers are found guilty as soon as it ‘appears’ that the officer has done something wrong. Way before the whole incident can be reviewed and the TRUTH obtained, that officer is found guilty and nobody cares what the facts are. This folks, is a travesty!”

The op-ed followed a deputy’s being cleared in the case of Air Force veteran Deanna Robinson, who said the deputy assaulted her in March after he came to her home with child welfare officials to take her 18-month-old away because of neglect allegations, NBC reported.

The officer was cleared of the charges by a grand jury, but the rush to assume his guilt by some in the public likely led Meeks to publish his op-ed, in which he cites Romans 13:1, which says, “Everyone must submit to governing authority. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.”
