On-air reporter overcome with excitement at breathtaking rare spotting of blue whale

whaleOvercome by excitement and emotion, a BBC One reporter is beside himself after an extremely rare spotting of a blue whale off the coast of California.

Steve Backshall was interviewing Dorris Welch, an expert on whales, when he received word through his earpiece that a nearly extinct blue whale had been spotted by a news helicopter and his reaction is awe-inspiring.

“I don’t believe what I’ve just heard,” Backshall said, interrupting Welch.

“The largest animal ever known to have lived on our planet,” he said. “Larger than the dinosaurs. It’s back. It’s here. It’s in the bay right now live. This is one of the most extraordinary things I’ve ever seen.”

The reporter’s passion for his profession is unmistakable as he talked about the “extraordinary comeback” seen from some endangered species due to the protection efforts of man.

“When I started off filming wildlife just 16 years ago, if someone said go film a blue whale, I would have said they’re crazy,” Backshall said. “Now things have changed so much in the last couple of decades, just in my lifetime, that we can do this in real time.”

Backshall struggled to contain his emotions as he continued to describe the scene around him, with his colleagues stepped in to give him a chance to catch his breath.
