Police officer shot dead near Chicago; manhunt takes SWAT teams house to house

Schools were on lockdown and residents of a northern Chicago suburb were told to remain in their homes Tuesday during a massive manhunt for three men who shot a killed a police officer and stole his weapons and equipment.

The shooting occurred about 8 a.m. Chicago time, when a Fox Lake police officer radioed for backup advising that he was chasing three men, two white and one black, Lake County Sheriff’s Sgt. Christopher Covelli told CNN.

When backup arrived they found the veteran officer Lieutenant Joe Glenowitz, nicknamed G.I. Joe, a 32-year-veteran of the force, wounded with a single gunshot wound. His weapon had been stolen, according to Fox News. A ground search was underway late Tuesday by officers on foot, CNN reported. A no-fly zone has been issued for the area.

Canine units have also been dispatched. U.S Marshal officials and agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting.

“We asked residents to report any suspicious activity they happen to see — whether they think it’s something minor or major — and to keep an eye out for these three individuals,” Covelli told CNN.

“SWAT teams and heavily armed officers have been going door-to-door in a bid to track down the suspects while K9 units have been sent into surrounding wooded areas,” according to The Daily Mail.
