A San Francisco Bay area university did an about-face on its controversial former policy instructing students to call the 911 emergency reporting system to report “bias incidents” that just might leave somebody’s feelings hurt.
Santa Clara University, a Catholic institution, defined a “bias incident” as “a speech, act, or harassing action that targets, threatens, or attacks an individual or group because of their actual or perceived race, color, national origin, ethnicity, religious affiliation, sex, gender identity, disability, or sexual orientation,” according to Campus Reform.
The university instructed its students, “If [a] bias incident is in progress or just occurred: ALWAYS CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY.”
The local cops must have loved getting those calls.
According to the National Emergency Number Association:
Nine-one-one (9-1-1) is only to be used in emergency situations. An emergency is any situation that requires immediate assistance from the police/sheriff, the fire department or an ambulance. If you are ever in doubt of whether a situation is an emergency you should call 9-1-1. It’s better to be safe and let the 9-1-1 call taker determine if you need emergency assistance.
I guess mocking someone’s ethnic origin doesn’t count. Apparently the university‘s administrators finally got wise also.
