Democrat National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz finds herself in the familiar position of being attacked by political opponents, but this time they are from within her own party.
According to a report by the Washington Post on Saturday, Wasserman Schultz blocked a resolution backed President Obama’s Iran nuclear deal.
Because of the block James Zogby, the co-chair of the Resolutions Committee, drafted a letter of support for the president and went about obtaining signatures from the majority in attendance at the DNC winter meeting in Minneapolis.
“We wanted to show support for the president,” Zogbytold the Post. “We found that the best way to show support was a letter that members would sign on to, and the overwhelming majority of DNC members signed onto the letter. This is the President Obama we elected in 2008 who said, ‘I choose diplomacy over conflict,’ and he did it.”
Wasserman Schultz represents some districts in south Florida with large Jewish populations and finds herself in the precarious position of having to choose between her constituents and the president, the Post reported.
Wasserman Schultz’s situation is similar to that of Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), who is a member of the Senate leadership but who nonetheless announced his opposition to the nuclear agreement — to the consternation of many in his party.
Some Democrats on the national committee who were unhappy that the resolution did not come up for consideration said that, as DNC chair, Wasserman Schultz owed her allegiance in this instance to the president, regardless of her own local political considerations.
Democrats on Twitter were not forgiving in their assault of DWS. It might be one of the few things Republicans can agree with them on — if not the reasons, at least the conclusion. Especially the one that says “disgrace to this nation.”
Debbie Wasserman Schultz is not just a major disappointment to dems, she’s a disgrace to this nation, and a menace to PEACE in the world.
