America doesn’t have a gun problem — it has a mental health problem.
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump made clear that he supports the Second Amendment, notwithstanding Wednesday’s tragedy that took two young TV journalists’ lives.
During a telephone interview on CNN’s “New Day,” co-host Chris Cuomo asked the real estate billionaire if he would “do something different with gun policy.”
Before the bodies of WDBJ reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, had even cooled, the left was clamoring for stringent gun control measures. They included President Obama, White House press secretary Josh Earnest, Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton and Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe
If Cuomo thought Trump was going to play it safe and join the crown, he was sadly mistaken.
“I don’t think I would, because this is really a sick person,” Trump said of Virginia gunman Vester Lee Flanagan II. “This isn’t a gun problem, this is a mental problem.”
Trump apparently recalled the old maxim, “When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns” and continued.
“I know one thing: if you tried to do it, the bad guys would have them…and the good folks would abide by the law — they’d be hopeless, and it would just be a hopeless situation for them.”
“I’m a very strong Second Amendment person,” he told Cuomo.
Trump also brought up Chicago, which he said has “the toughest gun laws in the United States, yet you have people being killed all the time with guns” there.
Watch the exchange.
