Fox News’ Gretchen Carlson injects jaw-dropping stats into ‘anchor baby’ fight

babies statsFox News’ Gretchen Carlson revealed “fascinating” – and worrisome – statistics surrounding the issues of illegal immigration and birthright citizenship.

According to the US Census Bureau and the Pew Research Center, 8 percent of babies in the U.S. were born to illegal immigrants in 2008, Carlson reported on “The Real Story” Monday.

One can imagine the trajectory of that percentage after the massive waves of illegal immigration during the Obama administration.

Carlson used her findings to address the controversy surrounding the 14th Amendment and whether the Constitution dictates automatic birthright citizenship to those with illegal immigrant parents.

Presidential contender Donald Trump has stirred heated debate by declaring babies born within U.S. borders to illegal immigrants should not obtain automatic citizenship.

“In researching the anchor baby segment for today I found it fascinating to learn that the United States and Canada are the only two developed nations to still offer automatic citizenship to children born on their soil,” Carlson said. “Not a single European country follows the same practice.”

Clash of egos: O’Reilly, Trump battle, but who’s right on deportation?

“Once those babies turn 21, if they are still here, they can then sponsor other family members to enter the U.S.,” she said.

Carlson addressed Trump’s apparent willingness to challenge the 14th amendment from the way it is most widely interpreted today.

“Donald Trump claims he knows lawyers who believe the 14th amendment is vulnerable to the birthright citizenship argument,” Carlson said. “But so far no U.S. court has ever ruled against it.
