For anyone who ever wondered if a prepper shelter would actually survive a disaster, a Washington man has the answer.
As a wildfire that had already destroyed more than 227,000 acres marched toward his home, survivalist John Belles rode out the fire in his concrete, monolithic dome while flames as high as 20 feet engulfed the area surrounding the structure, KPTV reported.
“The fire was at this draw right here,” he told KPTV. “We didn’t have time to do much of anything. The fire was like 30 yards or so to the north of me when I decided to go into the building.”
Belles, who built the structure in 1999, thought he’d be safe inside while the fire burned around him.
“I didn’t know how it was going to work out, but I figured I was safe inside the building. It was cool and well protected with the concrete and everything,” he told KPTV.
Belles said he watched as the flames rolled past his windows while he was safe inside. When the fire had passed, he went outside to discover the structure had “no damage whatsoever.”
He said he prepared for such an emergency because he didn’t want to have to depend on the government or anyone else to save him.
“It’s a perfect example of the authorities being spread thin and not being able to take care of everybody,” he said. “You know, you can’t depend on that you have to prepare.”
