It didn’t take long for a Tennessee school district that banned all flags, including the American flag, to find itself under pressure from the American people.
Dickson County School District officials now claim the decree banning all flags and banners was misunderstood.
In an email to WBHQ Sunday night, school officials said the ban only applied to flags and banners on pickup trucks on school property.
The district also posted to its website to explain that it was not banning the American flag.
Information reported by news stations that the American Flag has been banned in the Dickson County school system is entirely inaccurate. The Flag is prominently displayed at every school in our county. It is also displayed in many of our classrooms. All students in Dickson County are allowed to voluntarily participate in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance each morning. We are very proud to have JROTC in both of our high schools, and we will continue to fly and respect the flag.
The statement stands in stark contrast to students who told WBHQ they were told they’d be kicked out of school if they brought an American flag anywhere on school property.
In fact, Dickson County Director of Student Services Steve Sorrells didn’t dispute the ban when he said banning the flag was “not an unpatriotic act.”
What do you believe?
Did students misunderstand, or is the school caving to pressure?
