Detroit residents follow police chief’s recommendation to arm themselves

Residents of one of America’s most crime-ridden cities are getting guns for self-defense — with the blessing of the city’s chief of police.

In 2013 Detroit’s top cop James Craig told citizens to arm themselves for their own protection and the citizens have responded in a big way, according to Fox News.

In 2014, about 1,169 handgun permits were issued, while 8,102 guns were registered with Detroit’s police department – many to prior permit holders who bought new firearms. So far in 2015, nearly 500 permits have been issued by the department, and more than 5,000 guns have been registered.

Resident Darrell Standberry told Fox News he always carries his weapon. The decision has been a lifesaver, he said.

“I never leave home without my weapon,” he told Fox News. “You never know when or what you’ll encounter.”

Standberry said his car was stolen when he left it running to pay for gas in 2011 and when he got back to the car the driver sped away.

But, Standberry said, the thief came back for him and was about to shoot him when he pulled out his own gun and shot the man through the windshield killing him.

“I saw him pulling out his gun to shoot me,” he said. “So I pulled my gun out and shot him.”

Standberry is far from the only person benefiting from the increase in civilians arming themselves said Rick Ector, who runs the blog Legally Armed in Detroit.

“Home invasions have gone down,” he told Fox News. “A huge reason was that there was a huge spate of homeowners using their guns against intruders. More people have guns and it’s making burglars cautious.”

Ector, who is also a firearms instructor, said women are increasingly arming themselves as well.

“It used to be that we would only have one or two women in a class,” he told Fox News. “Now we are seeing much, much more. This past May, I held a class where we trained 300 ladies.”

As for Standberry, he’s just glad he had his legal firearm on him on that fateful day.

“That day could have been much worse,” he said. “It could have been my life that was taken.”
