Now that Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is showing staying power, expect the unexpected from opposition research.
Team Trump responded to allegations that the real estate tycoon pursued Princess Diana after the break-up of her marriage with Prince Charles, seeing her as the “ultimate trophy wife,” the Daily Mail reported.
That’s according to British TV host Selina Scott, who claims Trump was “stalking” Diana — the Princess of Wales was reportedly uncomfortable with Trump’s advances.
Scott, who is reported to have a long-running feud with Trump, said Lady Di confided in her over dinner.
“He bombarded Diana at Kensington Palace with massive bouquets of flowers, each worth hundreds of pounds,” Scott wrote in the Sunday Times of London. “As the roses and orchids piled up at her apartment she became increasingly concerned about what she should do. It had begun to feel as if Trump was stalking her.”
Scott claims Diana, who died in a 1997 Paris automobile accident while fleeing from paparazzi, turned to her for advice.
“What am I going to do?” Princess Diana reportedly asked. “He gives me the creeps.’”
When contacted by the Sunday Times, a Trump spokesman said, ‘They had a great relationship, liked each other a lot, but nothing ever came of it.”
Trump did acknowledge an affinity for Diana in his 1997 book, “Trump: The Art of the Comeback.”
“I only have one regret in the women department — that I never had the opportunity to court Lady Diana Spencer,” he wrote. “I met her on a number of occasions. I couldn’t help but notice how she moved people. She lit up the room with her charm, her presence. She was a genuine princess — a dream lady.”
If nothing else, the man has good taste.
