Business mogul and Donald Trump fan Mark Cuban declared this week that he wants to be a Republican, but can’t quite make the leap because of the disarray both within establishment ranks and in the party itself.
In a post on his Cyber Dust social media app, Cuban started off complimentary toward the GOP and wrote:
“I would prefer to be a Republican. I want smaller government. I want smarter government. Just like most Republicans.”
And then Cuban went off.
“The Republicans have a much bigger problem that will crush them in every Presidential election until this changes.
“The Republican Party requires that all their presidential candidates conform to consensus.
If you don’t agree with every platform of the party, not only are you called a RINO, a ‘Republican in Name Only.’ You are considered unelectable in primaries and become a source of scorn on Fox News.
“That’s a problem,” he wrote.
Cuban seems to buck the party base, which in turn bucks the “go-along (with Democrats) to-get-along” types.
It’s a bit ironic since Cuban has recently backed Trump, who has stirred up the Republican base like no candidate has for a long time.
The Dallas Mavericks owner recently wrote that Trump “changed the game” and “is the best thing to happen to politics in a long, long time.”
Many in the GOP base who are sick of “RINOs” whitewashing the party, would agree with Cuban’s sentiment.
Nonetheless, Cuban went on to explain his reasoning, saying that Republicans lack leadership and need more independent thought.
Cuban confessed that Democrats also suffer from a lack of leadership, but added, “I don’t want to be a democrat. Until things change, I’ll sit in the middle and think for myself. Unlike the Republicans.”
Reaction to Cuban’s statements on Twitter were mixed:
@dallasnews Mark Cuban always speaks his mind and it is worth listening to. Republicans are you listening?

@dallasnews Good. He may be an a-hole, but he gives a significantly more useful and interesting take on politics than the DMN ever has. — Colby Adams (@ColbyJAdams) August 12, 2015
