Former Miss Pennsylvania ARRESTED for faking cancer to scam thousands of dollars

beauty queenThe old adage that beauty is only skin deep may be fitting in a story about a beauty queen who faked having cancer.

For money.

That’s the allegation being leveled by Pennsylvania State Police, who say Brandi Lee Weaver-Gates, a former Miss Pennsylvania U.S. International pageant winner, lied about having chronic lymphocytic leukemia, WJAC-TV reported.

According to investigators, Weaver-Gates, 23, took money raised to help pay for her medical bills and used it for other purposes. One such fundraiser, “Bingo for Brandi,” raised $14,000 in April.

Weaver-Gates went so far as to shave her head to appear as though she was undergoing chemotherapy, and would have family members drive her to John Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore and wait in the lobby while she would go to another part of the hospital to supposedly have treatment. Sometimes, the hapless relatives waited for hours.

But police say it was all “an elaborate scheme,” and have charged the former beauty queen with theft by deception and receiving stolen property, according to WJAC-TV.
