Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump go way back, but Giuliani doesn’t sound too certain about the real estate tycoon’s chances of being elected president, if the New York Daily News sources are correct.
But he did say Fox News should have paid Trump to participate in last week’s presidential primary debate, which drew 24 million viewers, making it the highest rated primary debate in television history.
That’s according to a New York Daily News source who encountered the former mayor at a private event in New York.
The two men have been friends for 25 years, according to the Daily News, but apparently Giuliani was willing to offer a blunt assessment of Trump’s chances.
“Donald Trump must be drinking the Kool-Aid if he thinks he’s going to be president,” he reportedly said, according to the Daily News source.

The source said Giuliani told guests at the event that while Trump may not be a consummate politician, he is a great entertainer.
“Donald really is smart, and he knows how to create great theater,” Giuliani said, according to the source. “If he hadn’t [qualified for] the debates, Fox should’ve paid him to be in them. Fox should be grateful. If it wasn’t for [N.J. Mayor Chris] Christie and Trump, it wouldn’t have been that exciting.”
Casting doubt on the report, Giuliani had appeared on MSNBC’s “Hardball” just before the debate and was supportive of Trump, comparing him to former President Ronald Reagan.
“This is a very smart guy,” he told host Chris Matthews. “This is a person who is media-savvy in ways that some of the other candidates aren’t. And he’s a lot more substantive than you realize.”
Giuliani also expressed little confidence in Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton’s chances of prevailing in 2016.
“I’m not so sure she’ll make it through the primaries or win the general election,” he reportedly said.
