Mainstream-media journalists got busy pretending to do their jobs soon after the highly anticipated Republican debates concluded Thursday night.
By many accounts presidential contender Marco Rubio gave a solid performance during the debate, but apparently NBC’s Matt Lauer didn’t notice. When Lauer had Rubio on the “Today” show Friday, all he could do was talk about Donald Trump.
“Donald Trump refused to rule out a third-party run,” Lauer started. “Sounds like a bit of a threat to me. How does that impact the way you and other candidates take him on directly?”
Rubio could see immediately where the interview was going, and tried to steer Lauer back around.
“Well, it doesn’t impact it at all. And the truth is…I’m not running against any of the other people who are on that stage. I’m running for president.”
Lauer has been at the media-bias game too long to be swayed by a fresh-faced politician like Rubio. So he launched into what could be the most idiotic question ever asked post-debate by a “real” journalist.
“Let me ask it this way.” Lauer started.
“As you stood on stage last night listening to what [Trump] said and watching what he did, did you find yourself thinking, ‘If I am not fortunate enough to be the nominee of this party I could enthusiastically support Donald Trump to be the next President of the United States and commander-in-chief’?”
Somehow Rubio was able to keep his cool under Lauer’s relentless Trump questioning.
Here is one of Rubio’s best lines from the debate:
If I’m the nominee, how will Hillary Clinton lecture me about living paycheck to paycheck? pic.twitter.com/cxeKsaDaIO
— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) August 7, 2015
“Who is Hillary Clinton to lecture me about living paycheck to paycheck… who is Hillary Clinton to lecture me about repaying student loans?” Rubio said.
Rubio tied what could have been his best line of the night, with his heartfelt true story of living the rags-to-riches (relatively speaking) American dream.
Too bad guys like Lauer don’t seem to care so much about little things like that.
