The Navy officer who defied a Defense Department gun ban on military bases and fired at a terrorist during an attack in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in July had come prepared.

Lt. Cmdr. Timothy White ended up firing at the terrorist who killed five military personnel at military facilities in Chattanooga on July 16, and a source told Navy Times that White may have been expecting the attack.

While the investigation over White’s use of an unauthorized firearm is ongoing, reports the Navy has all but decided not to bring charges against him.

A simultaneous report has emerged on why White was carrying a weapon in the first place.

According to the Navy Times a source said White brought the gun to work “because he was worried about the command’s safety after recent threats from the Islamic State militant group to attack U.S. troops at home.”

Threats against military personnel and their families have been escalating to the point where the FBI recently sent an alert about Middle Eastern males approaching military family members at their homes.

It seems White wasn’t willing to be a sitting duck and defied the “gun free zone” policy.

The terrorist attack against him and his comrades proved White was right. Four Marines and a sailor died in the two attacks on an armed forces recruiting center and a Naval reserve center.

An autopsy and ballistics assessment will determine if any of White’s rounds hit terrorist Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez, who died at the scene.

It is safe to say, however, that the incident could have been more tragic if White hadn’t gone with his gut and didn’t have his gun.
